The Magic of Light

Course Outline

Through the viewing of several archival/documentary films produced in the 1940s, we will examine phenomenon of light. We will examine how the human eye receives images via light within the visible spectrum.

We will also examine the light spectrum beyond visible light including infra-red and ultra violet light. For the latter, we will examine the medicinal uses of UV light as used for prevention and/or treatment of diseases. We will also examine the use/s of X-rays.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Course Introduction

The course incorporates the viewing of several archival/documentary films broken down as follows;

Part 1 examines the structure and functions of the human eye. Part 2 examines the light phenomenon including visible, infra-red and ultra-violet light. Part 3 examines the curative powers of UV light. Part 4 examines the functions/uses of X-rays.

Course Summary

Our world began with light and it is from light that our universe takes its form and is recognizable. To understand how light achieves this is to understand the meaning of life itself. Sight is our most precious gift and without light, sight would not be possible. Light has the power to create warmth, grow food and heal diseases such as Rickets by providing the Vitamin D our bodies require/obtain from sunlight. Light is the miracle all around us that when harnessed, can do wonders.
