Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Learn the population limitations of septic tank systems;
- Learn the importance of detention time when using septic tanks;
- Learn how subsurface absorption is used in conjunction with septic tanks;
- Learn the subsurface soil conditions required to utilize leaching wells;
- Learn how to determine soil percolation rates;
- Learn about humus composting toilets;
- Learn the pros and cons of incineration toilets;
- Learn how intermittent sand filters are used to treat waste from Imhoff and septic tanks;
- Learn when conditions may dictate use of a mound system rather than a leach field; and
- Learn the soil and site factors that limit the use of mound systems.
Intended Audience
This course is intended for engineers and other design and construction professionals wanting an introduction to the technologies, equipment and design practices needed to design, construct and operate waste treatment systems handling less than 1.0 million gallons per day of effluent.

About Course Author
Paul Guyer is a registered mechanical engineer, civil engineer, fire protection engineer and architect with over 35 years experience in the design of buildings and related infrastructure. For an additional 9 years he was a senior-level advisor to the California Legislature on infrastructure and capital outlay issues. He has designed and supervised the design of hundreds of construction projects requiring the preparation of detailed working drawings and specifications for federal, state and local public agencies and private companies. He is a graduate of Stanford University and has held numerous national, state and local positions with the American Society of Civil Engineers and National Society of Professional Engineers.
