Touching the Earth Lightly: The U.S. 20 Iowa River Bridge
J.M. Syken
Course Outline
In this course, we will examine the creation of the U.S. 20 Iowa River Bridge in central Iowa. Located in an environmentally sensitive area on a ten-acre site along the Iowa Rive Greenbelt, the extreme precautions taken to protect the site, river and native species during the construction of the bridge will be the focus of the presentation.
This will include; site selection, bridge type selection (I-girder deck), construction method (via incremental launch), erosion control, foundation types, species monitoring, site restoration etc. As well, the successful use of the incremental launching method for a steel I-girder bridge for the first time will be highlighted/discussed as will be the minimal environmental impact of the bridge to the Greenbelt.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Course Summary
Why did it take twenty-five years to build a highway bridge over a river valley in central Iowa? The answer is as complicated as the design/construction of the bridge itself. Open since the summer of 2003, the average motorist passes over the +1,600-foot span in less than a minute, perhaps noticing the beautiful river valley from a sideways glance. That was the “big idea” behind the bridge: maintain the beauty and fragile ecosystem of the river and its valley for posterity by “touching the earth lightly.” That meant selecting a bridge type/method of construction, pier foundation/type/s, soil erosion/water contamination control measures and site monitoring/restoration during all phases – before, during and after – construction to make sure the ten acres the bridge and its approaches occupy in the Iowa River Greenbelt testify to the care and concern for its well-being that the men and women who designed and built it at the beginning of the twenty-first century took to keep it that way for the generations of Americans yet to be born.
