Understanding Government Building Information Modeling (BIM) Requirements

Peggy Yee, Ph.D.

Course Outline

Federal, state, and local governments are beginning to mandate BIM on design and construction projects.  This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the BIM requirements mandate by the General Services Administration (GSA), US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

Intended Audience

This course is intended for architects, engineers and contractors.

Benefit to Attendees

Attendee of this course will be to comply with Federal Government BIM requirements on design and construction projects.  In addition, attendees will have a competitive edge by better understanding these requirements when putting together proposals for pursuing government contracts.

Course Introduction

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an exciting new technology that has revolutionized the design and construction industry.  BIM has been show to provide greater efficiencies and cost savings throughout the design, construction, and facility management lifecycle.

This course is a compilation of various government documents on BIM requirements for the Federal Government.  This course will focus of three federal agencies that are leading the way in BIM: GSA, USACE, and VA.  By understanding the goals and objectives of each agency and their BIM requirements, course attendees can understand why each agency has mandated BIM on design & construction project and respond accordingly by providing better professional services and deliverables to meet the needs of the Federal Government.

Course Content

In this lesson, you are required to download and study the following documents:

GSA’s BIM Guide Series 02: Spatial Program Validation (PDF)
USACE New York District BIM Requirements (PDF)
VA BIM Guide (PDF)

Please click on the above underlined hypertext to view, download or print the document for your study. Because of the large file size, we recommend that you first save the file to your computer by right clicking the mouse and choosing "Save Target As ...", and then open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you still experience any difficulty in downloading or opening this file, you may need to close some applications or reboot your computer to free up some memory.

Course Summary

The Federal Government’s use of Building Information Modeling is intended to create efficiencies in the design & construction process.  Each government organization has tailored BIM requirements specifically to meet their agency’s mission and mandate, highlighting the universal benefits of implementing BIM.  Not only do all parties involve benefit, but also the American taxpayer through increased efficiencies and decreased costs.
