Non-Residential Floodproofing for Buildings Located in Special Flood Hazard Areas
Vincent D. Reynolds, MBA, P.E.
Course Outline
This 1 hour course Non-Residential Floodproofing - Requirements and Certification” as published on the website of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will cover several areas related to non-residential floodproofing including, A-zone floodproofing, High hazard areas, hydrodynamic forces, and hydrostatic forces. Several example problems are included to aid the student in solving problems that present themselves to the designer of non-residential buildings in SFHA.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
Learning Objective

Intended Audience
This course is intended for hydrologists, local, state, and federal government officials, floodplain managers, environmental engineers, geo-hydrologists, municipal engineers, LEED Certified Professionals, project managers, any persons working in the civil engineering field or anyone with an interest in non-residential floodproofing.
Benefit to Attendees
This course will cover Non-Residential Floodproofing - Requirements and Certification.
Course Introduction
Floods from 100-year storm events or 1% annual chance event can have damaging and catastrophic effects for buildings located in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has developed requirements in order to eliminate or mitigate damage to buildings in SFHA.
This course will describe the design, construction and planning requirements for floodproofing non-residential buildings under the NFIP. This course material is based on the document “Non-Residential Floodproofing - Requirements and Certification” as published on the website of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
