IEEE Standard for Performance of Adjustable Speed AC Drives Rated 375 kW and Larger

Timothy L. O'Hearn, PE

Course Outline

This 7-hour course covers the performance standards for adjustable speed AC drives rated above 375 kW and above 750 V output voltage as used in petrochemical and similar applications.

The course materials are based entirely on IEEE Std. 1566-2005 IEEE Standard for Performance of Adjustable Speed AC Drives Rated 375 kW and Larger.  It will be necessary for the student to obtain a copy of IEEE Std. 1566-2005 IEEE Standard for Performance of Adjustable Speed AC Drives Rated 375 kW and Larger.  This is a very useful resource and is recommended for all practicing electrical or project engineers involved in the specification, design, protection, installation, and maintenance of Adjustable Speed Drives rated 375 kW and larger.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be familiar with:

  • Definitions of the terms that are used in this standard;
  • Factors to consider in defining the required performance of a drive system;
  • Adjustable speed drive (ASD) systems;
  • Adjustable speed drive construction;
  • Isolation and interlocking requirements;
  • ASD ratings;
  • ASD structure requirements;
  • Power supply requirements;
  • ASD capacity requirements;
  • Transient voltage requirements;
  • ASD control requirements;
  • Input transformer ratings and requirements;
  • Motor requirements;
  • Required switchgear and control gear;
  • ASD cooling systems;
  • Utility coordination;
  • Engineering study requirements;
  • Testing requirements;
  • ASD Commissioning;
  • Drawing and document requirements; and
  • ASD data sheets.

Intended Audience

The intended audience is professional electrical engineers, project managers, and project engineers, involved in the specification, design, protection, installation, and maintenance of three-phase adjustable speed AC drive systems used in industrial and commercial power systems.

Benefit to Attendees

This course covers the performance requirements for an adjustable speed drive system rated larger than 375 kW including, but not limited to, input transformer or reactor as required, power electronics, control interfaces, cooling system, switchgear, and motor. Requirements for power quality, engineering analysis, startup-assistance, training, and spare parts are also included.

Course Introduction

Many factors are involved in the specification of an adjustable speed drive rated larger than 375 kW.  This course covers theperformance requirements for an adjustable speed drive system including, but not limited to, input transformer or reactor as required,power electronics, control interfaces, cooling system, switchgear, and motor. Requirements for power quality, engineering analysis,startup-assistance, training, and spare parts are also included.  This recommended practice is a useful tool that assists individuals,organizations, and suppliers involved in the specification, design, installation, and maintenance of three-phase adjustable speed ACdrive systems. This standard is intended to assist users in defining the required performance of a drive system in clear terms.
