Course Outline

This is a five hour online course that discusses the basic data used in GS and its considerations of implementing a GIS application. Topics of the course are: data acquisition and input; georeference; accuracy; use; sharing; data types; components of a GIS; sources of error in a GIS; data in LIS; scale; types of projections; data distortions; coordinate systems; Data formats; and Examples of data formats.

This course includes a multiple choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Course Summary

GIS is a fast developing technology that has filtered into many professions. Some use of the GIS is far advanced while other uses are in its infancy stages. This course is one in this series of courses that presents some of the basic of understanding about data in GIS. In any GIS implementation data is critical before any GIS application development is considered. This course highlights some of the important issues and data formats used in GIS.
