Maryland Laws and Rules
for Professional Engineers

Course Outline
State laws require that all licensed professionals become familiar with the rules regulating their professions. This course provides a review of the Maryland Board Rules for Professional Engineers contained in Title 9 of Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR), which include Chapter 01 Procedural Regulations, Chapter 02 Hearing Regulation, Chapter 03 Code of Ethics, and Chapter 06 Continuing Professional Competency Requirements under Subtitle 23. In addition, it covers recent amendments to COMAR 09.23.03.09, which allow for the use of digital signatures by licensees. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.

Background
Prior to January 1, 2018, all Maryland licensees are required to obtain 24 Continuing Professional Competency credits in each biennium to renew their licenses. At least 18 out of 24 CPC credits must be in Category A programs; no more than 6 may be in Category B programs. However, the number of hours for continuing education for Maryland engineers has been reduced from 24 to 16 in each biennium, effective January 1, 2018. In addition, there is no Categories A and B requirements.

Course Summary
To safeguard the life, health, property and welfare of the public, licensed professionals must fully understand the Board Laws and Rules. A licensee who violates any provision of the Board Laws and Rules may be subject to disciplinary action, such as reprimand, suspension or revocation of the license in addition to fines.
