Mr. John M. Rattenbury, P.E., CPD, GPD, LEED AP, ARCSA AP, is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a licensed Professional Engineer in Massachusetts. He began his engineering career as an officer in the United States Navy, serving aboard a Spruance-class destroyer based in Norfolk, Virginia. Following his military service, he entered the consulting engineering profession and joined R.G. Vanderweil Engineers, LLP in Boston, where he has spent more than three decades designing plumbing and piping systems for institutional, laboratory, research, healthcare, and other technically complex facilities. He currently serves as an Associate in Vanderweil’s Plumbing & Piping Group.

Mr. Rattenbury has authored numerous technical articles and has been actively involved in the development of plumbing engineering standards. He was the principal author of ANSI/ASPE Standard 45, Siphonic Roof Drainage, and has participated in subsequent revisions of the standard as well as other industry standards and technical working groups. His work in siphonic roof drainage was recognized by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers with its Award of Merit and the ASPE Research Foundation Award of Merit.

In addition to his consulting practice, Mr. Rattenbury has developed and presented continuing-education programs on plumbing engineering topics for professional organizations and engineering audiences throughout the United States. His areas of technical interest include siphonic roof drainage, domestic water distribution, water quality, laboratory and specialty piping systems, plumbing codes and standards, and the application of engineering analysis to building plumbing systems.
