Design for Safety: Applying the Hierarchy of ControlsPE PLS RA HSW

Helen Chen, Ph.D., PE

This course introduces Prevention through Design (PtD)—also known as Design for Safety—showing how to “design out” hazards across a facility’s life cycle using the hierarchy of controls. You’ll learn PtD’s strategic goals, relevant OSHA/NIOSH guidance, and practical methods for eliminating, substituting, and engineering out risks in architecture, construction, and operations. We’ll examine roof parapets, embedded anchors, and other permanent features that reduce falls, along with decision-making tools, checklists, and specification language that integrate safety into design reviews, procurement, and commissioning. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
