Landslides are a widespread natural hazard that destroys homes, infrastructure, and ecosystems while causing significant loss of life and economic disruption. Based on the USGS Landslide Handbook (Circular 1325), this course provides an introduction to landslide processes, types, causes, and effects. Students will learn how landslides form, how to recognize warning signs, and how factors such as rainfall, earthquakes, volcanic activity, and human actions contribute to slope failure. The course also summarizes modern tools for evaluating landslide hazards - including mapping, aerial and field reconnaissance, remote sensing, and monitoring - and outlines proven mitigation and risk-reduction practices for communities, planners, and property owners. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD. Specific course topics that are on the borderline and are not acceptable by the NY Board have been noted under the course description on our website. |
