D.L. Peterson, P.E. In urban areas, sanitary sewer service is provided by public sewer systems. However, in many rural areas public sewer systems are not available or too far away to be economical for connection. In these areas sanitary sewer service is usually provided by on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS). These systems are commonly called septic systems, since the primary treatment is provided by a septic tank. A properly designed and constructed septic system can provide adequate treatment, potentially as good as a secondary treatment plant. These systems also protect groundwater and surface water from pollutants present in sanitary sewage, at costs often much lower than the costs of a public sewer system. This course will cover the basics of soil investigations, septic tank sizing and absorption trench sizing, along with more advanced topics such as intermittent sand filters and mound systems. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
