Kent R Johnejack, P.E., C.E.A. Spills from mining, oil and gas, chemical, agricultural, and other heavy industries have consequences that range from environmental damage and worker harm to lost production and bad press. Preventing spills avoids these consequences, but if spills do occur, proper containment will limit the consequences. Spill containment is a key component of an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) program that provides an entity its “social license to operate.” The objective is to contain spills such that materials are not released to the environment. This course is divided into three parts that cover spill containment for tanks and pipelines, respectively, followed by the operation, inspection, and maintenance of those containments. Part 1 explains spill containment concepts for tanks, columns, and vessels. Part 2 describes spill containment concepts for buried, ground-level, and overhead pipelines with diverse sizes and lengths. Part 3 describes how to effectively operate, inspect, and maintain secondary containments. Although the three courses complement each other, they are stand-alone courses and none are pre-requisites for the others. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD. Specific course topics that are on the borderline and are not acceptable by the NY Board have been noted under the course description on our website. |
