Carbon Dioxide Sequestration and Removal

Ahmad Hammouz, P.Eng.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), grounded in the most current science, technology pathways, economic insights, and policy frameworks identified in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Carbon Dioxide Removal reports and the Carbon Negative Shot initiative. Learners will examine how CDR fits within national and global climate strategies, why it is essential for addressing residual and legacy emissions, and what role CDR plays in achieving long-term net-zero and net-negative emission goals.

The course explains the foundational principles behind CDR, including the major technological and land-based removal pathways such as direct air capture (DAC), biomass-based carbon removal and storage (BiCRS/BECCS), enhanced weathering and mineralization, soil and biomass carbon sequestration, and marine CDR approaches. Students will evaluate the performance characteristics of each pathway, including cost ranges, readiness levels, scalability constraints, permanence, measurement and monitoring (MMRV), environmental impacts, and infrastructure needs.

By examining the DOE’s analytical modeling, deployment scenarios, policy incentives, and commercialization barriers, learners will gain insight into the market conditions, scientific standards, and regulatory tools needed to scale CDR responsibly. Cross-cutting themes such as environmental justice, workforce needs, feedstock constraints, land and ocean stewardship, regional resource mapping, and economic development opportunities are integrated throughout the course. By the end, participants will be prepared to critically assess CDR technologies, evaluate decarbonization portfolios that include removal, and understand what is required for the United States to achieve large-scale, durable CO₂ removal by mid-century.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
