Building Electrification Technologies

Ahmad Hammouz, P.Eng.

This course provides a comprehensive overview of building electrification, focusing on the rapid transition away from fossil-fuel-based systems toward electric technologies that reduce energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and indoor air pollutants. Participants will examine the technical, economic, and policy drivers accelerating electrification, including the U.S. National Blueprint for the Buildings Sector and strategies to decarbonize space and water heating, cooking, laundry, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The course presents evidence-backed insights into electrification technologies such as air-source heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, induction cooktops, smart electrical panels, and thermal energy storage. Special emphasis is placed on market readiness, installation challenges, performance considerations, and opportunities for cost savings and emissions reductions in residential, small commercial, and multifamily buildings.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
