Lee Layton, PE This 4-hour course introduces the concept of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). As the name implies, a Virtual Power Plant is not a physical generator station. It is a technology-driven approach to energy generation, distribution, and management. It optimizes the use of small, decentralized energy resources by evaluating the real-time status of demand versus supply, energy costs, transmission availability, and other variables in each geographic area. Virtual power plants aggregate distributed, flexible energy resources such that they can operate collectively as a single, dispatchable power entity. Large scale integration of numerous distributed energy resources, controlled by a single operator, can function similarly to a conventional power plant. This course describes the resources used in a VPP and explains how these resources are aggregated into a virtual power plant. The technology behind the VPP concept is described in detail and example case studies are presented. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
