Helen Chen, Ph.D., PE The first quarter of the 21st century has produced a series of engineering breakthroughs that are changing how humanity explores space, manufactures advanced electronics, edits biological systems, and powers modern society. This course examines five landmark technologies: reusable rocket technology, the James Webb Space Telescope, extreme ultraviolet lithography, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, and solar power with lithium-ion battery storage. Each topic illustrates a different frontier of modern engineering. Together, they show how engineers are expanding access to space, extending human vision into the early universe, manufacturing nanoscale semiconductor devices, modifying the genetic code of life, and building cleaner and more resilient energy infrastructure. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD.
