Understanding Occupancy Classification and Types of Construction

John C. Huang, Ph.D., PE

This course provides a concise overview of Chapters 3 and 6 of the 2021 International Building Code® (IBC®), focusing on how buildings are classified by occupancy and construction type. Participants will learn how occupancy groups are determined based on use, hazard, and risk levels, and how these classifications affect fire protection, egress, and structural design. The course also reviews the five construction types—Types I through V—and explains their fire-resistance ratings, material restrictions, and design implications. Special emphasis is given to new provisions for mass timber construction under Type IV categories.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
