Brian Lisiewski, P.E. Artificial intelligence is now a routine part of engineering practice — from generative tools that draft reports and produce design alternatives, to agentic systems that autonomously monitor and control real-world processes. This course gives licensed engineers a practical, discipline-spanning framework for using both generative and agentic AI without compromising the ethical obligations that come with a license: protecting public safety, staying within one's competence, safeguarding confidentiality, and remaining in responsible charge of every deliverable. Drawing on current guidance from NSPE, ASCE, and NCEES — including the 2024 NSPE Board of Ethical Review Case 24-2 on AI misuse — the course walks through real-world scenarios in civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, software, and environmental engineering so that participants leave able to recognize where AI helps, where it creates risk, and how to keep human judgment and accountability firmly in charge. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD. Specific course topics that are on the borderline and are not acceptable by the NY Board have been noted under the course description on our website. |
