This course provides a comprehensive assessment of how extreme cold weather affects electric vehicles (EVs) and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), based on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) report "Electric Vehicle and Charging Infrastructure Assessment in Cold-Weather Climates: A Case Study of Fairbanks, Alaska," produced for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It examines how EVs and chargers perform in temperatures as low as −40°C (−40°F), drawing on real-world data collected from Teslas operated through Alaskan winters.
Learners examine how cold weather affects lithium-ion battery chemistry, cabin heating, and battery thermal management, and how those effects translate into reduced driving range and longer charging times. The course evaluates EVSE operational temperature ratings, charging-rate behavior, and the best practices—preconditioning, heated storage, and smart charging—that keep EVs viable in extreme cold. A central finding is that although efficiency drops significantly (range fell by up to 69% for outdoor-stored vehicles), none of the studied vehicles experienced failures that prevented travel.
