Ahmad Hammouz, P.Eng. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of decarbonizing building thermal systems, the strategies that reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and enhance energy efficiency across building heating, cooling, and hot-water systems. It emphasizes the integration of high-efficiency technologies such as heat pumps to minimize the environmental impact of building thermal loads. Learners explore the step-by-step process of transitioning to low-carbon thermal systems, including evaluating building loads, improving the building envelope, reducing internal and ventilation loads, selecting appropriate heat pump configurations, and designing for optimal performance. The course also addresses advanced control systems, energy recovery, and the integration of renewable energy sources to achieve decarbonization goals. Drawing on practical applications and lessons from real-world projects, the course offers insight into optimizing system configurations, mitigating short cycling, selecting low-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerants, and applying lifecycle cost analysis, right-sizing, and phased-deployment approaches that balance performance and cost. It also situates these technical practices within the policy and regulatory landscape, including standards from ASHRAE and ENERGY STARŪ, and promotes a holistic, systems-based approach to decarbonized design. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public.
