This course provides an in-depth exploration of the strategies, technologies, and policies driving decarbonization of the U.S. buildings sector, as set out in the National Blueprint for Decarbonizing the U.S. Buildings Sector by 2050. With buildings responsible for more than one-third of total U.S. greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, the course focuses on practical approaches to reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and transitioning to clean energy sources. Learners examine the pathways to reducing building-related emissions by 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2050, organized around the Blueprint's four strategic objectives: increasing energy efficiency, accelerating on-site emissions reductions, transforming the grid edge, and minimizing embodied life-cycle emissions. Key topics include heat pump technology for space and water heating, building-envelope upgrades and load reduction, grid-interactive buildings and demand flexibility, and the integration of on-site renewable energy and battery storage. The course also addresses advanced control systems, energy recovery, and low-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerants, together with lifecycle cost analysis, phased retrofitting, and the policy frameworks that shape deployment, including federal and state incentives, building codes, and efficiency standards from ASHRAE, ENERGY STARŪ, and DOE programs. Throughout, it emphasizes the Blueprint's cross-cutting goals of equity, affordability, and resilience.
