This online PDH course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of grid-interactive buildings, focusing on demand response, load management, and energy flexibility to enhance building efficiency and support a more resilient, low-carbon grid. The course emphasizes how advanced building automation, smart controls, and distributed energy resources (DERs) play a critical role in reducing peak demand, optimizing energy use, and integrating renewable energy sources. Participants will learn the fundamentals of demand response and grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs), including energy efficiency, load shedding, load shifting, and real-time modulation, and will explore the role of building automation systems (BAS), smart thermostats, and model predictive control (MPC) in optimizing energy consumption while preserving occupant comfort. Key modules cover grid services, HVAC load management, energy storage, and bidirectional energy flow, demonstrating how buildings can shift and shed loads to support grid stability. The course also examines demand-flexibility strategies for commercial and residential buildings — including thermal energy storage, smart EV-charging integration, and on-site renewable generation — along with the policy frameworks, utility incentives, and market structures that support demand-side management (DSM) programs. Economic, operational, and technical challenges in implementing load-management solutions and integrating DERs with the grid are addressed throughout.
