Willis Carrier and the Engineering Principles of Modern Air Conditioning

Willis Haviland Carrier transformed air conditioning from an improvised cooling practice into a disciplined branch of engineering. His early work connected temperature, humidity, airflow, and cleanliness as interdependent variables; his psychrometric methods gave engineers a practical way to analyze moist air; and his centrifugal refrigeration equipment helped extend controlled indoor environments from factories to theaters, offices, stores, and other large buildings.

This course uses Carrier's career as a framework for studying the engineering principles of modern air conditioning. Participants examine psychrometrics, heat and moisture transfer, the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, cooling and dehumidifying coils, load estimation, air distribution, ventilation, thermal comfort, controls, energy performance, commissioning, refrigerant stewardship, and resilient operation. Historical accomplishments are paired with current professional practice so that Carrier's legacy becomes a foundation for sound HVAC design and operation rather than simply a story about invention.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance understanding of the course materials.
