Ground Improvement 101/201: Aggregate Piers and Vibro Stone Columns (Live Webinar)

Aggregate piers and vibro stone columns are essentially the same element, a column of densified aggregate that reinforces and stiffens soft or loose soils so foundations and slabs can bear on improved ground. They differ mainly in how they are installed and how they are typically designed. This 90-minute live session opens with a brief history of both systems and where they apply, then moves through a 101 segment on design and construction fundamentals and a 201 segment on design in practice: the Priebe method commonly used for vibro stone columns, the Two-Layer Method commonly used for aggregate piers, why service loads and settlement govern most designs, and how load testing and quality control verify performance in the field. It also covers why a specified bearing capacity alone is not enough for design, and the three inputs that keep a design efficient: service loads, settlement tolerances, and footing geometry.
