The F-number system was developed because of the inadequacy of the straightedge specifications historically used in the construction industry to control slab flatness and levelness. As a result of equipment developed by the Face Company to qualify the levelness and roughness of slabs, the ACI Committee 117 established a system to evaluate the readings of this same machine. This method is referred to as the F-number system and is used today to specify and evaluate the levelness and flatness of both slab-on-grades and elevated slabs. This course includes a quiz at the end.
