Through mountains, under rivers, beneath cities... tunnels are no boring story! In this course, we will take you underground to explore the history and ingenuity behind some of the world's tunneling marvels. Besides survey control, we will discuss in detail the three steps to a tunnel's success: excavation, support, and lining. In addition, we will address the challenges of tunneling through various types of soil/rock and how to reduce fire hazards during tunnel operations. Course highlights include the Hoosac Tunnel, London Underground, Holland Tunnel, Channel Tunnel (Chunnel), Marmaray Tunnel, and Gotthard Base Tunnel. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
