Course Outline
Process design drawings are the beginning of the facility construction project in the process industries. Other essential drawings are based on the process P&ID, PFD, Equipment Arrangements and Pipe Routings. Proper creation of these drawings is critical to the successful construction, operation and maintenance of the facility.
This course material provides a basic understanding of the various aspects of the process drawings. An understanding of the intent and content of these drawings enables the process engineer to produce the most effective set of design drawings possible and provide others who depend on these drawings with a proper basis for their own design.
This course includes
a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding
of the course materials.
Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this material the student will:
- Understand the types and ranges of the process drawings;
- Have an understanding of the intent of all of the process drawings;
- Have an understanding of the necessary content of the process drawings;
- Have an understanding of the various symbols used to create the drawings;
- Understand how the process drawings are used by others in the project team;
- Understand the necessity of accurate drawings to the creation of a proper cost estimate;
- Understand the relationship between the P&ID and PFD; and
- Understand how pipelines are displayed on the various drawings.

Course Summary
Accurately prepared process drawings are the basis for a properly designed and built process industry facility. This basis consists of the following critical drawings:

The effort required to create accurate and useful design drawings is significant but less so than resolving the problems created by poorly developed drawings which will impact all engineering functions.
