Intended Audience

This course is intended primarily for Licensed Land Surveyors.  The course will also be beneficial to Architects and Professional Engineers who are lawfully authorized to perform elevation certifications in the jurisdiction where the structure is located.

Benefits for Attendees

Elevation certification is more than a simple inspection.  This course will hopefully help eliminate many of the primary errors that Surveyors are currently making during the completion of the Elevation Certificate form.

Course Introduction

The National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) purpose is to allow property owners to purchase flood insurance protection from the Federal government. The cost of an individual property owner's flood insurance policy is dependent upon its vertical height above the anticipated flood water level.  The Elevation Certificate (EC), FEMA Form 81-31, provides the elevation data that documents the various heights associated with a given property.

This course is a video guide to the NFIP Elevation Certificate (EC) for Surveyors, Architects, and Engineers; it is an in-depth review of the elements of the certificate completed by surveyors.

Course Content

In this course, you will be directed to the Youtube website and the tutorial entitled

Surveyor’s Guide to the Elevation Certificate (video)

At the site, you will be presented with ten (10) separate modules.  You are given the option of playing all, or activating each module individually.  If you choose the latter option, viewing them in order is recommended if you are new to the NFIP Elevation Certificate.

Important note:  You must carefully review the instructions included with the EC in order to correctly answer some of the multiple choice quiz questions.  The EC form and the instructions are located at:
