In industrial facilities, power plants, etc., overhead hoists are used for rigging equipment and materials where lower overhead restricts the use of a crane. These overhead hoists are suspended from lifting lugs. An overhead lifting lug is attached to the building structure either by welding directly to it (structural steel or an embed plate in concrete) or by welding to a base plate which is anchored to concrete ceiling by expansion anchors.
Although the following course illustrates an overhead lifting lug, the associated engineering principles can be applied to evaluate lifting lugs attached to a spreader beam, lifted load, etc.
