AISI to Launch Six New Online Courses for Design Engineers
Institute shifts technology transfer focus from seminars to online courses and CDs

Washington, D.C., May 14, 2001 – American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced today plans to convert six of its bridge, pipe, tank and utility pole seminars to online formats over the next several months as part of its ongoing efforts to offer design engineers easy ways to learn about designing in steel while earning continuing education units (CEUs) to enhance their professional development.

AISI has already launched two online courses-the first on designing weathering steel bridges and the second on designing with Corrugated Steel Pipe-that are available on www.PDHonline.org. The PDHonline.org web site is designed as a fully automated virtual classroom where the server is programmed to conduct quizzes and issue certificates of completion.

"Online courses provide the quickest and most efficient means of educating professional engineers worldwide on the benefits of designing in steel," said Duane Dunham, AISI chairman and chairman, president and CEO of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. "Design engineers can learn on their own time and at their own convenience, and they are rewarded with additional knowledge and CEUs-an excellent value."

Dunham said that since the online weathering steel bridge course was launched in November 2000, 120 certificates of completion have been awarded to design engineers. The Corrugated Steel Pipe course was just launched in February, and already 51 certificates of completion have been issued.

These courses are all part of AISI's Market Development program and are supported through the investment of the following Construction Market Committee member companies:

Bethlehem Steel Corporation
California Steel Industries, Inc.
Dofasco Inc.
IPSCO Inc.
Ispat Inland Inc.
LTV Steel Company
National Steel Corporation
Nucor Corporation
Rouge Steel Company
Stelco Inc.
USS-POSCO Industries
USX-US Steel Group
WCI Steel, Inc.
Weirton Steel Corporation

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is a non-profit association of North American companies engaged in the iron and steel industry. The Institute comprises 42 producer member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 156 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.

PDHonline.org Promotes Online Communication among Engineers

WWW.PDHonline.org recently has formed a partnership with www.Eng-Tips.com to promote online communication among civil and structural engineers.

According to this new partnership, PDHonline.org will provide direct links to each of the eighteen civil and structural engineering forums on www.Eng-Tips.com. "These focused forums are the best engineering forums I have ever seen on the Internet," said Dr. John Huang, President of PDHonline.org based in Fairfax, VA. "The addition of these forums on PDHonline.org provides another venue for engineers to obtain professional development, i.e., through online communication with their peers. On Eng-Tips, you can post a question within a particular forum, and forum members respond with their collective experience to solve the problem. It's like having your own staff of qualified experts on call."

PDHonline.org is a website dedicated to the online professional development for civil and structural engineers. The website is designed as a fully automated virtual classroom, where the server is programmed to conduct quizzes, issue Certificates of Completion, and maintain the records of PDH activities. The online courses offered by PDHonline.org range from the cold-formed steel shear wall design to the use of weathering steel in bridge structures. Since it was launched in February 2000, PDHonline.org's concept of online professional development has been embraced by thousands of engineers from all over the world.

Eng-Tips.com, a website maintained by the Tecumseh Group, presents forums within each engineering discipline, as well as forums on codes and standards, engineering computer programs, and by industry (steel, concrete, commercial products, etc.) Engineers can customize their "Threadminder" to include an opening page that presents only those forums in which they are interested. With over 17,500 members and 750 Partner and link exchange websites, Eng-Tips is the largest independent engineering forum on the Internet! Over 700 new members per week join in and members contribute at a rate of over 600 technical posts per week.

For more information, please visit the web site at http://www.PDHonline.org or contact Dr. John Huang at info@msn.com or (703) 988-0088.
