Introduction to Wastewater and Storm Water Pumping Stations
Jerry D. Morrow, P.E.
Course Outline
This course is for civil engineers and engineering managers who are responsible for overseeing the design of storm water and wastewater pumping stations. Special attention is given to meeting municipal standards and complying with common standard drawings. Some basic hydraulics are also included, along with a number of guidelines on such items as wet well size, detention times, pumping capacities, electrical requirements and problems an engineering designers and supervisors should look for.
Factors involved in selecting a site for a pumping station:
- Establishing Station capacity
- Considerations in designing a wet well
- Presentation and discussion of the various wet well arrangements
- Charts and graphs to establish wet well dimensions
- A discussion of manually cleaned bar screens and mechanically cleaned bar screens
- A discussion of the uses of comminutor
- Design consideration and discussion of the types of Centrifugal Pumps
- Pneumatic Ejectors and the uses they fulfill
- Presentation of methods of Pump Selection
- The hydraulics involved in pump station configuration
- Discussion of how pumps are selected using system head curves
- How Piping and Valves effect the pump selection and headloss
- Electrical Equipment and Recommendations for pump stations
- The uses for Prefabricated Pumping Stations
- Discussion of the Appurtances necessary for storm and wastewater pump stations
- A presentation of Typical Municipal Specifications for pumping stations
- Pump Requirements
- Piping and valves Interior Items necessary for proper facilities
- Structural Requirements for pump stations
- Electrical specifications necessary for pumping stations
- Fencing of Pumping Facilities
- Paving of access Roads serving pump stations
- Inspection and Acceptance procedures
- Typical Drawings
and Details used in pump station construction
The course includes
a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding
of the course materials.

Intended
Audience
and Benefit to the Attendee
This
course is prepared for civil engineers, engineering managers and engineering
supervisors who are responsible for overseeing the design storm water and wastewater
pump stations. Special attention is given to dealing with public agencies and
meeting municipal standards in the design. A designer, a manager or a supervisor
can obtain an overview of items necessary to a good design, with examples and
design charts and graphs. Common specifications and standard drawings are included
to demonstrate design drawings commonly used.
