Course Outline
This eight hour course provides valuable information for those individuals who have to design, install and operate either SVE or bioventing systems. Completion of this course will provide the student the necessary information to investigate the need for, how to design, how to install and how to operate a SVE system. It was designed by an instructor who has conducted numerous similar training courses.
The text for this course is the US Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Manual, “Engineering and Design Soil vapor Extraction and Bioventing”, EM-1110-1-4001, June 2002.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end of each of the five lectures, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course material.

The intended audience for this course is any professional engineer who is involved in the investigation of circumstances to utilize a SVE, design professionals and those who install and operate groundwater and soil contamination treatment systems using a SVE system, particularly contaminated with VOCs.

Course Introduction
Groundwater contamination from petroleum products and other organic solvents is a serious environmental problem. Residual volatile organic compounds constitute an ongoing source of contamination. Soil vapor extraction (SVE) and bioventing are two of the most cost effective methods of removing VOCs from unsaturated soils. This course will look at the basic strategies for determining when to use SVE, look at basic design principles, start up and operation and maintenance considerations.

Course Summary
A variety of volatile organic compounds that cause soil contamination and subsequently may contaminate groundwater and drinking water can be treated using soil vapor extraction or bioventing. The course presents basic material needed to understand how the SVE system works, how to design a SVE system and how to start up and operate such a system once its been installed at an appropriate site.
