Introduction to DoD Domestic Wastewater Treatment
Robert E. Merton, P.E.
Course Outline
To insure consistency in construction standards and systems utilized in DoD facilities, common design criteria and requirements have been developed and incorporated into Unified Facilities Criteria (UFCs). Wastewater treatment is one of the areas covered by a UFC. Domestic Wastewater treatment plant designs associated with DoD projects now rely extensively on commercial industry standards. However, there are some requirements and limitations in the applicability of commercial standards to Military projects as delineated in UFC 3-240-02.
This 2 hour course provides an overview of the design requirements for DoD projects and identifies the appropriate references to be utilized.
This course requires the completion of a multiple-choice quiz at its conclusion in order to obtain the necessary certification.
Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course the student should be able to:
- Understand the background, purpose and applicability of this UFC;
- Understand which DoD facilities are covered under these standards;
- Be familiar with the general design criteria for these facilities;
- Understand the basis for the design population;
- Understand some limitations and requirements associated with site selection;
- Be familiar with the requirements and limitations associated with the treatment process selection;
- Be able to identify options associated with the selection of onsite treatment systems;
- Be able to identify several types of small treatment plant processes;
- Understand some of the issues associated with chemical storage and handling; and
- Understand the applicability of best management practices.
Intended Audience
This course is intended for design professionals, engineers, architects, facility planners, contracting personnel, contractors and others that may be involved with, and responsible for, DoD wastewater treatment plant planning and design projects.
Benefit to Attendees
Attendees will be familiar with the applicability and limitations of commercial standards and design requirements for DoD Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plants.
