Create a Web Site for Your Engineering Firm - I

Course Outline

In this course, students will learn to make information and sales Web sites, and will learn how to put them onto the Web. This course uses Chapters 1-5 from the fully-illustrated downloadable e-book Web Site ABCs, along with open-source software called Kompozer, available for free download on the Internet. The course provides foundational knowledge by leading the student through creating a Web page "from scratch" using simple HTML commands. Then it moves to using the what-you-see-is-what-you-get HTML editor, Kompozer. This editor is similar to Microsoft Front Page, which could also be used by the student.

This three-hour course provides basic information on simple HTML and how to use a what-you-see-is-what-you-get HTML editor.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student will learn:

That a Web site is actually a file folder containing a variety of files;
To create the index.html file and to go back and forth between Notepad (for create the code) and a browser such as Internet Explorer (to see what the code is creating), to make changes and to see the updated result;
The HTML commands needed to create a simple Web site. These will include commands to create headlines, add paragraph breaks, include images, and add text links;
To use Kompozer to create a template for the four pages of the site, and then modify each to create the individual page;
How to create and modify tables;
To lay out a navigation bar using a table;
The difference between relative links and outside links;
The necessary resolution for images placed on a Web page, and about the necessary permissions. The student will learn how to add images to the Web page; and
Some ways of enhancing the page's value to the search engines such as Google.

Intended Audience

The intended audience is the engineer who wants to learn to build a Web site for his or her firm, to create an informational Web site on a topic of interest, or to sell an e-book.

Benefit to Attendees

This course will lead the engineer step by step with illustrations through the process of creating first a simple Web site using basic HTML, then a more complex one using Kompozer.

Course Introduction

Engineers have all had some programming experience. But the programming of the Internet is somewhat different. Learning how HTML works and how to put a Web site together can benefit any engineer who wants a Web site to help promote his or her business.

This series of three courses leads you step by step through learning simple HTML, creating simple Web sites, and then more complex Web sites of several types. It's all you need to get started with a Web site of your own, using open-source Web creation software Kompozer.
