Wind Turbine Technology – Overview

Brian M. McCaffrey, P.E.

Course Outline

This course provides an overview of wind turbine components and design considerations for optimization of power generation.  Typical power ratings and sizes for wind turbines are explained for various residential-scale, industrial-scale, and utility-scale applications.  Additionally, the components and considerations for a typical utility-scale wind energy project are discussed.

This course is based entirely on Wind Turbine Technology Overview, published by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the reader will be familiar with the following topics concerning wind turbines:

  1. Basics of wind turbine design and components;
  2. Relationship between wind speed and power output;
  3. Wind turbine optimization; and
  4. Applications for distributed generation and bulk power delivery.
