Course Outline
The course discusses about five basic power cycle based on which actual systems works. It explains thermodynamic processes based on which these cycles are designed. Modifications in Rankine and Brayton cycles are discussed in subsequent sections. Otto, Diesel and Dual cycles are explained on thermodynamic co ordinates.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Be able to Power cycles;
- Be able to know thermodynamic representation of power cycles;
- Be able to understand modifications in Rankine cyle;
- Be able to understand modifications in Brayton cycle; and
- Be able to understand the difference in Otto, Diesel and Dual Cycles.

This course is intended for Mechanical and Electrical engineers and can be taken by other branch engineers also.

Course Introduction
Vapor and gas power systems develop electrical or mechanical power from energy sources of chemical, solar, or nuclear origin. The present course introduces vapor and gas power systems. The processes taking place in power systems are very complicated hence to understand the same they are idealized with basic thermodynamic processes.

Course Summary
The course helps to understand different gas and vapor power cycles like Rankine cycle, Brayton cycle, Otto Cycle, Diesel Cycle and Dual Cycle. Based on these cycles practical systems like thermal power plant, air craft engine, gas turbine power plant, Automobile engines work. Hence the thermodynamic knowledge of these power cycles helps to understand the practical cycles.
