Introduction to Infrared Inspections
Michael J. Hamill, P.E.
Course Outline
This course consists of a primer in the subject of infrared thermography and infrared cameras. It begins with a discussion of heat transfer. Emphasis is placed on the complex subject of thermal radiation. It progresses to an examination of infrared cameras, and provides an overview of applications for infrared thermography. It also has some sample images taken with infrared cameras.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
Learning Objective
This course will:
Intended Audience
This course is intended for prospective users of infrared cameras, as well current users who would like to deepen their understanding of infrared thermography. It also provides technical supervisors with adequate information to oversee personnel who will perform infrared surveys.
Benefit to Attendees
Current users of infrared cameras will learn information which makes it feasible to fully utilize their camera’s capabilities. Prospective new users will better be able to judge which type of infrared camera will best suit the needs of their organization. Managers responsible for either choosing to purchase a camera for internal use, or contracting out infrared survey work will be in a better position to make a suitable judgment about which is the better option.
Course Introduction
Infrared radiation (IR) is a form of electromagnetic radiation which is related to the temperatures of objects emitting the IR. Technological advances since about 1990 have allowed manufacturers of IR cameras to pack more capability into devices which are easier than ever to use. This course explains infrared radiation in some detail. It also explains some widely-available features and user adjustments of infrared cameras. The course discusses the most frequently used applications for infrared cameras. It also provides practical information for engineers and technical managers whose organizations could benefit from inspections of equipment, homes and buildings made possible by infrared cameras.

Course Summary
This course begins with a discussion of the basics of heat transfer. This is because a firm grasp of the subject of heat transfer help users of infrared cameras be aware of the power and limitations of infrared thermography. Important information regarding infrared cameras is conveyed. After completing the course, readers should have enough of an understanding about infrared cameras, thermography, and options for training & inspections to make intelligent decisions.
