ADA Requirements for the Design of Parking Spaces

Mark P. Rossow, PhD, PE Retired

Course Outline

This one-hour online course discusses design requirements for van accessible parking spaces and explains when these spaces are required, what features are required, and where to locate them on a site.  Analogous considerations are presented for restriping parking lots.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Aisle width, vertical clearance, and signage for van accessible parking spaces;
  • Relation of access aisle to accessible route;
  • Requirements for access route;
  • Location and distribution of parking spaces;
  • Number of van accessible spaces relative to accessible spaces;
  • Readily achievable barrier removal;
  • Minimum number of accessible parking spaces; and
  • Requirements when restriping parking lots.

Intended Audience

This course is intended primarily for civil engineers involved in the design of parking spaces.

Benefit to Attendees

A person completing this course will be able to design parking spaces that comply with ADA requirements.

Course Introduction

When a business restripes a parking lot, it must provide accessible parking spaces as required by the ADA Standards for Accessible Design.  In addition, businesses or privately owned facilities that provide goods or services to the public have a continuing ADA obligation to remove barriers to access in existing parking lots when it is readily achievable to do so.

Course Content

This course is based on a compilation of two documents from the U.S. Department of Justice: 1) “Design Details: Van Accessible Parking Spaces” excerpted from ADA-TA No. 1, August 1996, and 2) “ADA Business BRIEF: Restriping Parking Lots,” October 2001.
