Course Outline
This is a five hour online course that discusses the basic data used in GS and its considerations of implementing a GIS application. Topics of the course are: data acquisition and input; georeference; accuracy; use; sharing; data types; components of a GIS; sources of error in a GIS; data in LIS; scale; types of projections; data distortions; coordinate systems; Data formats; and Examples of data formats.
This course includes
a multiple choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding
of the course materials.
Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Be able to understand the various methods of data acquisition and input into a GIS;
- Understand the common term called georeference used in GIS;
- Relate the importance of considering accuracy and use of data in any GIS implementation;
- Recognize the common method of acquiring geographic data via data sharing;
- Be able to understand the basic data types used GIS application;
- Define the different functional and physical components of GIS;
- Recognize the various sources of errors in a GIS;
- Define the essential concept of a Land Information System (LIS);
- Understand the various data sets used in a LIS;
- Appreciate the influence of the scale of data capture used in GIS;
- Understand what is meant by Data Formats;
- Recognize and understand some of the common data formats used in GIS;
- Describe the general characteristics of projections types;
- Recognized that the map projections contains various distortions;
- Choose suitable map projections for the intended GIS application;
- Identify the reasons for various coordinate systems; and
- Recognize what a datum and how they affect GIS applications.

Course Summary
GIS is a fast developing technology that has filtered into many professions. Some use of the GIS is far advanced while other uses are in its infancy stages. This course is one in this series of courses that presents some of the basic of understanding about data in GIS. In any GIS implementation data is critical before any GIS application development is considered. This course highlights some of the important issues and data formats used in GIS.
