The Function of Gate Valves Used in the Oil & Gas Industry
Peter Smith, HNC (Mech)
Course Outline
This is a 1 hour course utilizing an extract from my book "The Valve Selection Handbook", published by Elsevier and now in it's 5th Edition. The extract, on Gate Valves, is chosen from Chapter 3, - "Manual Valves" pages 73 to 96.
I have also included Appendix C, "Standards pertaining to Valves", from "The Valve Selection Handbook". This references the relevant standards. This is also available as a separate course.
It is essential that the individuals who are responsible for specifying, procuring, inspection and the installation are familiar with the functions of the Gate Valves that they will come across in the Oil & Gas Industry.
Each Gate Valve
specified for the Oil & Gas Industry, will be covered by several standards,
that deal with design type, construction, dimensions, end type, inspection,
testing and numerous other characteristics.
This course includes
a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding
of the course materials.
Learning Objective
The objective is to learn the various functions of a Gate Valve and the standard that apply to the valve.
The Course will cover:
Intended Audience
Piping Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Project Engineers, Procurement Managers and Project Buyers, QA/QC Personnel, Inspectors.
Benefit
to Attendees
A student who is
familiar with the characteristics of a particular valve type, will feel confident
when specifying a valve for a specific function and they will be in a position
to access the necessary data from within the text of the standards covering
the valve.
Course Introduction
There are numerous
types of valve, some have completely different characteristics and other serve
similar functions. It is essential that a Student is familiar with not only
the function of a particular type of valve, but they must also be aware of the
numerous standards and specifications that apply to that valve.
Course
Content
In this course,
you are required to study Chapter
3, - "Manual Valves" pages 73 to 96 and Appendix
C - "Standards Pertaining to Valves" in my book "The Valve
Selection Handbook", published by Elsevier and now in it's 5th Edition.
You need to open or download these documents to study this course.
Course Summary
The correct specifying
of valves is essential to ensure that the valve chosen is "fit for propose"
and will remain in service for the duration of the plant's life, with the minimum
of maintenance.
Quiz
Once you finish studying the above course content, you need to take a quiz to obtain the PDH credits.
