Course Outline
Chain drives and chain conveyors are used in many applications. Bulk materials are: moved, distributed, elevated, heated, cooled, and collected in chain conveyors. Roller chain drives are used in: conveyors and elevators of all types, mining equipment, combine harvesters, balers, fertilizer spreaders, and many other applications. There are five sections in this short and to the point course:
1. Chain Drive Applications
2. Chain Drive Power Rating Calculations
3. Drag Chain Power Calculations
4. Sprocket information
5. Excel’s, “Goal Seek” for optimizing engineering calculations.
The course includes
a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding
of the course materials.
Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course the student will have:
- seen illustrations of typical applications of roller chain drives;
- calculated the dimensions of roller chain drives;
- calculated the horse power rating of standard ANSI roller chains;
- calculated the volume of bulk materials transported by horizontal and inclined drag chain conveyors;
- estimated dimensions of drag chain conveyors; and
- use Excel’s “Goal Seek” to optimize the engineering and design of roller chain drives and drag chain conveyors.

The information will be especially useful to: students, entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators who want to be able to engineer roller chain drives and drag chain conveyors.
