Mechanical Considerations for Servo Motor and Gearhead Sizing
Chad A. Thompson, PE
Course Outline
This three hour course consists of a discussion of the special mechanical issues involved in selecting a servo motor/gearhead combination, including the relevant equations the designer needs to know, as well as a detailed practical example where the issues discussed are applied.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
Learning
Objective
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- See how the issues involved in a servo gearhead system differ from a traditional gearmotor;
- Understand how payload inertia affects servo gearhead requirements;
- Understand how the motion profile of a rotating payload affects a servo gearhead system;
- Be able to calculate output torque and speed requirements of a servo gearhead system;
- Be able to relate gearhead manufacturer torque and speed ratings to system requirements;
- Understand the ways in which the gear ratio of a servo gearhead affects the system;
- Be able to calculate reflected inertia and understand why it is important;
- Understand the unique mechanical specifications of a servo motor; and
- Have the ability to evaluate a servo/gearhead combination for specific application suitability.
Intended Audience
This course is intended for any engineer or designer involved in the design, specification or use of servo motor/gearhead applications who wishes to have a better understanding of the special mechanical considerations of these applications.
Benefit for Attendee
An attendee of this course will gain an understanding of the special mechanical issues involved in servo motor/gearhead applications.
Course Introduction
There are special mechanical considerations required when specifying a rotary servo motor and gearhead combination. While there are other things that should be taken into account when selecting a servo system, this course will concentrate on the issues relevant to the mechanical designer.

Course Summary
This course is intended to familiarize the designer with the mechanical issues involved when specifying a rotary servo motor and gearhead combination. We will first discuss the basic application parameters that are needed to select the components of a servo/gearhead system, then go through the procedure for making these selections. Finally, we will run through a detailed example where we will select a servo and gearhead for a specific application.
Quiz
Once you finish studying the above course content, you need to take a quiz to obtain the PDH credits.
