At the conclusion of this course the student will:
- Compare: small batch, repetitive, and continuous manufacturing;
- Know the four phases of the life cycle of a typical product;
- See essential elements of a factory graphically depicted;
- Perform product sales, break-even analyses;
- Make capital investment calculations;
- Examine the effect of inflation;
- Use Excel to calculate present values of investments;
- Select equipment by the equivalent annual cost method;
- Estimate: Labor, materials, and factory costs;
- Perform “Make-or-Buy” decisions;
- Examine a typical semi-automated factory layout;
- Estimating assembly cell floor area;
- Understand the importance of product drawings as applied to manufacturing;
- Review a state of the art assembly cell;
- Compare manual and automated assembly cells;
- Calculate assembly / machining line cycle time balance;
- See automated assembly cells; and
- Calculate the pay-back period of an industrial robot assembly cell.
Intended Audience
The information will be especially useful to students, entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators who want to update their knowledge base concerning some of the most important elements of manufacturing planning.
Benefit to Attendees
Attendee of this course will be able to plan and make important financial evaluations of manual and automated manufacturing systems.
Course Introduction
The market place for industrial products today demands innovation, improved designs, high reliability, quality, and low prices. This means rapid prototyping and production systems that are agile and able to change more rapidly. The basic components of manufacturing systems are outlined in the course.
