Modern Ceramics in Engineering

Maryam Golabchi, Ph.D.

Course Outline

Advanced ceramics have remarkable mechanical, chemical, electrical and magnetic properties. They have driven forward the technology in many fields such as electronics, transportation, communication, medical treatment, energy, and material production. In this article, ceramic applications have been reviewed in order to help engineers recognize different ways of ceramic involvement in industries and vast applications of advanced engineering ceramics.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

Intended Audience

This course is intended for architects, engineers and contractors.

Benefit for Attendee

Attendee of this course will be familiar with one of the most abandoned and important sort of materials and its applications.

Course Introduction

It has been said that in the 21st century, an illiterate is not one who cannot read or write, but one who cannot learn and relearn. We all know what ceramic is, as it has existed since our beginning. But it is time to learn more about it and update our classical knowledge regarding the materials that play a critical role in modern industries and have accelerated the technological progresses.

Course Summary

In this article, the major applications of ceramics – the most abandoned solid materials on the surface of earth – were briefly described. Readers should come away having gained a better understanding of ceramics and their diverse ways of contributing to our modern lifestyle from an engineering point of view. Hopefully this article will seed innovative engineering ideas in material design and applications as well as production of the new generation of materials.
