Course Outline
The course discusses about different insulation material, mechanism of heat transfer in insulation material, classification of insulation material, its commercially available forms, selection procedure etc. There are softwares available to select the insulation material and to decide their thickness. One such software 3E plus is discussed with an example. Course also discusses refractory material, its types and properties etc.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course, the person will:
- Be able to understand types of commonly available insulation and refractory materials;
- Be able to know different heat transfer mechanism involved and heat transfer calculation for insulation material;
- Be able to understand how to select insulation material with the help of software 3E plus;
- Be able to know about refractory materials; and
- Be able to learn thumb rules of insulation material.

This course is intended for Mechanical, Chemical, Civil and Electrical engineers and can be taken by other branch engineers also.

Course Introduction
The course is about insulation and refractory material. As the insulation reduces heat loss and thus saves fuel or energy invested in the process and thus it pays for itself in due course of time. For most of the applications payback period is less than two years and in major cases it is less than few months, hence applying thermal insulation is first and foremost energy conservation measure taken up by an engineer. The course helps an engineer to understand importance of insulation material.
