Classification of Corrosion Failures

Semih Genculu, P.E.

This course will cover the major forms of corrosion accounting for the vast majority of corrosion problems observed, along with several occasionally encountered forms occurring in specific environments. Uniform or general corrosion proceeds independent of the materialís microstructure and component design. It is highly dependent upon the environmental conditions and the materialís composition, generally occurring at a slow rate. All the remaining forms of corrosion are localized, dependent upon the environments, the components and systems designs, and/or the microstructure of the materials. These forms typically produce higher corrosion rates than uniform corrosion, and in some cases can be quite rapid. Each of the various forms of corrosion should be evaluated for a material and environment when designing new systems. The course covers all forms of corrosion observed with some materialsí susceptibilities and general protection schemes for the various forms.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials. otection schemes for the various forms.

NY PE & PLS: You must choose courses that are technical in nature or related to matters of laws and ethics contributing to the health and welfare of the public. NY Board does not accept courses related to office management, risk management, leadership, marketing, accounting, financial planning, real estate, and basic CAD. Specific course topics that are on the borderline and are not acceptable by the NY Board have been noted under the course description on our website.

AIA Members: You must take the courses listed under the category "AIA/CES Registered Courses" if you want us to report your Learning Units (LUs) to AIA/CES. If you take courses not registered with AIA/CES, you need to report the earned Learning Units (not qualified for HSW credits) using Self Report Form provided by AIA/CES.
